Duties and Responsibilities of the last post in Sweden: 

The Department of Cardiology (Mälar Hospital, Eskilstuna), which is a section of Internal Medicine, includes:

In patients:

  • Coronary Care unit (5 beds)
  • General Ward (14 beds)
  • Post-operative ward (CABG – 6 beds)
  • General Ward (7 beds)
  • Interventional Ward -Coronary Angiography +PTCA (6 beds)
  • Echocardiography Unit
  • Exercise Test Unit
  • Pacemaker unit
  • Computerized ECG units
  • ECG Digital Transmission Unit (2 systems: 1-Transmission of ECG´s from all ambulances or any patient site to the CCU and to the Senior Cardiologist in Call mobile digital Unit for prompt decision about on site initiation of Thrombolytic treatment and direct admission to the CCU. 2-A data base unit for storage of all ECG´s taken in our hospital and associated medical centres.

Outpatients Clinics:

  • General Cardiology follow up clinic
  • Referral Cardiology clinic
  • PTCA follow up clinic
  • CABG follow up clinic
  • Myocardial Infarction follow up clinic

Cooperation and coordination with other Units:

  • Department of Anaesthesia
  • Department of Thoracic Surgery
  • Department of Clinical Physiology
  • Department of Thoracic Radiology.

The Departments consists of 5 Senior Consultants, 3 Registrars and 4 Junior doctors.

As Senior Consultants, we are fully in charge of the Cardiology Division. We are responsible for the sorting of admissions, initiation of investigations [invasive and non-invasive] and treatment including referring patients for open cardiac surgery or PTCA performed in our hospital.

We are also responsible for taking care of patient’s pre-and post mechanical interventions, PTCA, CABG and patients with assisted Mechanical Devices as well as those with Heart transplantation.

We have the responsibility for the ambulance digital ECG transmitted directly from/within and around our area to our coronary care unit for the prompt decision about Thrombolytic therapy (at home or under transportation to the Hospital) for patients with acute chest pain.

I am the senior consultant responsible for the echocardiography unit in our department performing echocardiography examinations in the cardiac general ward as well as in the coronary care unit. I am performing exercise test as a routine diagnostic procedure and for the risk evaluation in patients with myocardial infarction before discharge.

I attend the coronary angiography and cardiac surgery rounds as a senior physician for selection of patients suitable for PTCA, CABG or other interventional procedures.

As a senior consultant I run and support different out patients follow up clinics such as myocardial clinic, PTCA clinic, heart failure clinic and general cardiology out patient’s clinic as well as referral cardiology clinic.

As a senior consultant I am taking part in a rotational out of hour on call duties covering cardiology. This includes consultations for in-patients in our hospital as well as for patients at the associated hospitals and medical centres.

I am also responsible for training, teaching and supervising of medical officers and registrars in Cardiology.

My responsibility also includes co-ordination and co-operation with the Department of Cardiac Surgery, Uppsala Academic Hospital.
